I use various different price when I sell my CD. I have a friend with a computer "burn" a few copies and then I sell them at my performance in the park and charge a price I think I may get from the person. Sometimes a few pfennig, sometimes some candles and sugar. This is good business pratice in my humble opinion.

Bruno Leicht

I fully agree that there are discernible differences between CD and MP3, though I'd venture to say that about 90% of music consumers couldn't tell you the difference, nor do they have equipment that would accentuate these differences.

Also, if you stop yelling, maybe you'll still have those bionic ears ;)

Thanks. I've been saying for years that Amazon should throw in the digital download for free when you buy a CD. The consumer has the ability to rip the CD when they get it anyways, so it isn't like the labels (or Amazon for that matter) are losing out on a sale. And it gives the customer the satisfaction of listening instantly.

Nice article. When it comes to download vesus cd, I typically follow the general rule that the download needs to be priced in the single digits (say $9) and at least $3 less than the cd for me to consider opting for the download. Given the prices you found for Frisell's latest, there's no way I'd opt for the download. An album download costing more than $10 is outrageous. You want to see some crazy pricing for downloads and physical cd, check out the ArtistShare webpage. They want $15 for the download of Chris Potter's latest and $19 for the cd. Outrageous pricing in both formats.

The mp3 + cd combination is interesting and I think it could become the standard package if labels and vendors pushed it. If I were Amazon, I would throw in the download with every physical cd purchase. I'd pay $12-$13 to get the cd and mp3 every time over a $9 download only. This offers instant gratification and the security of the physical backup.
